How the Random Card Generator Works
Each draw uses JavaScript's Math.random() to pick a random index from the filtered card list. When you select a type such as "Playing", the tool narrows the pool to that category first, then draws from it — so a playing-card draw never surfaces a tarot or oracle card. Draws are with replacement: each press of Generate makes a fresh, independent pick, meaning the same card can appear more than once in a multi-card draw, just as it can when flipping through a real deck without setting drawn cards aside. For the technical detail on how the browser generates these values, see the Wikipedia article on the standard 52-card deck.
When building this generator we chose to include jokers and a curated set of tarot, trading, and oracle cards alongside the playing cards, so the "All Cards" pool gives you a broader creative spread. Every card in the active pool has an exactly equal probability of being selected — there is no weighting by rarity or type. All generation runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to or stored on a server.
Example Card Draws
To illustrate what the tool produces, here are three genuine draws from the deck:
- Queen of Hearts — a playing card draw; the red suit, face-card rank, and ♥ symbol all display on the card face.
- The Star — a Major Arcana tarot card (value 17) representing hope and renewal; drawn when the type filter is set to "Tarot" or "All Cards".
- Charizard — a Rare Holographic trading card; when pulled in a multi-card draw alongside a playing card it shows just how varied the "All Cards" pool can be.
Playing Card Odds at a Glance
The playing-card pool in this generator contains 33 cards — a curated subset rather than a full 52-card deck (see deck composition below). With equal-probability drawing, here are the chances for common outcomes:
| Outcome | Cards in pool | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| Any specific card (e.g. Ace of Spades) | 1 | 3.0% |
| Any Ace (one per suit, 4 suits) | 4 | 12.1% |
| Any face card (K, Q, J across 4 suits) | 12 | 36.4% |
| Any Hearts card (full 13-card suit) | 13 | 39.4% |
| Any red card (Hearts 13 + Diamonds 8) | 21 | 63.6% |
| Either Joker (Red or Black) | 2 | 6.1% |
Note: the playing-card pool here is an intentional curated subset — Hearts and Diamonds are represented but Diamonds (8 cards), Clubs (6 cards), and Spades (4 cards) are abbreviated compared to a standard deck. Select "All Cards" to draw from the full 76-card multi-type pool including tarot (22), trading (11), and oracle (10) cards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q.How many cards can I generate at once?
You can generate up to 20 cards in a single draw. This makes it perfect for card spreads, group activities, or when you need multiple options for inspiration.
Q.Are the tarot card meanings authentic?
Yes, our tarot cards include traditional meanings and interpretations from established tarot practices. Each card includes symbolic descriptions for divination and self-reflection purposes.
Q.Can I use this for actual card games?
Absolutely! Our playing card generator includes a curated set of playing cards across all four suits plus jokers, and can be used for virtual card games, practice, strategy development, or teaching card game rules.
Q.What trading card games are included?
Our database includes popular cards from Pokemon (Charizard, Pikachu, Mewtwo, and others) and Magic: The Gathering (Black Lotus, Lightning Bolt, and more), featuring various rarity levels from Common through Mythic Rare.
Q.Does the generator draw with or without replacement?
Draws are with replacement — each card is picked independently from the full pool, so the same card can appear more than once in a multi-card draw. This matches the behaviour of drawing from a reshuffled deck each time, rather than removing drawn cards from the pool.
Q.Does the playing card pool include jokers?
Yes. The playing card pool includes both a Red Joker and a Black Joker alongside the standard ranked and suited cards. If you want to avoid jokers, switch the type filter to a specific suit or use the Tarot, Trading, or Oracle options instead.
Q.Is the playing card pool a full 52-card deck?
No — the playing card pool is a curated subset of 33 cards. Hearts is complete (13 cards), while Diamonds (8), Clubs (6), and Spades (4) are abbreviated, plus both jokers. This affects the probability of drawing any given suit; Hearts cards are more likely than Spades cards within the playing-card filter.
Q.How many cards are in the 'All Cards' pool?
The combined pool contains 76 cards: 33 playing cards (including jokers), 22 Major Arcana tarot cards, 11 trading cards, and 10 oracle cards. Each card has an equal probability of being drawn when this filter is active.
