How the Random Song Generator Works

When you press Generate, the tool filters the 61-song database to match your chosen genre and era, then selects from that pool using JavaScript's Math.random(). Every song in the filtered set has an equal chance of appearing — there is no weighting toward chart-toppers or recent releases. If you pick "All Genres" and "All Eras", the full 61 songs are in play; narrowing to, say, Classic Jazz reduces the pool to just 2 songs.

All selection happens entirely in your browser — no song titles or choices are sent to a server. When building the database we drew from recognised best-of lists across Australian and international music to give the collection genuine breadth, from 1680s Baroque classics to 2023 pop. For more on the randomness method, see the MDN documentation for Math.random().

Example Song Generator Outputs

Three real outputs drawn from the database, each showing what the tool's metadata display looks like:

  • Bohemian Rhapsody — Queen (1975, Rock, Classic) — one of the 10 classic-era rock songs; a fixture in the database because of its enduring cultural recognition.
  • Blinding Lights — The Weeknd (2019, Pop, Modern) — from the 12 modern pop entries; typical of the contemporary pop results you get when the era filter is set to Modern.
  • Somebody That I Used to Know — Gotye (2011, Alternative, Modern) — one of six Australian artists in the database, illustrating the local music representation in the Alternative genre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How many songs can I generate at once?

You can generate up to 10 songs in a single click. This is perfect for creating diverse playlists, exploring multiple artists, or finding varied music for different moods and occasions.

Q.What's the difference between classic and modern eras?

Classic era includes influential songs from 1680 through 1999, while modern era features contemporary releases from 2000 onwards. The database holds 32 classic-era and 29 modern-era songs.

Q.Are these real songs or fictional?

All 61 songs in the database are real recordings by real artists. Each entry includes the accurate release year, genre, and era classification so you can look the song up on any streaming platform.

Q.Can I filter songs by specific decades?

The tool filters by era (classic or modern) rather than by individual decade. Each result displays the release year so you can immediately identify which decade a song is from within your chosen era.

Q.Are any songs repeated or weighted in the results?

No. Every song in the active filtered pool has an equal probability of being selected. Songs are not weighted by popularity, chart position, or any other factor — each pick is independently random.

Q.Does the generator include Australian artists?

Yes. The database includes six Australian acts: Gotye, Sia, Glass Animals, Men at Work, John Farnham, Cold Chisel, INXS, and Helen Reddy. They appear when you select All Genres or their respective genre filters.

Q.Why does Classic Jazz only return two songs?

The Classic Jazz pool contains two entries — "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck (1959) and "Summertime" by Ella Fitzgerald (1957). When the pool is this small, both songs will appear frequently. Select All Genres or remove the era filter to widen the results.
