How the Random AFL Team Generator Works

When you press Generate, the tool calls JavaScript's Math.random() to pick a random index into the full array of all 18 current AFL clubs. Every club has an identical probability of being selected — there is no weighting toward popular or high-premiership sides. When you request multiple teams in one click, the generator tracks used indices so the same club cannot appear twice in the same result set.

All selection logic runs directly in your browser — no request is sent to a server, and nothing you generate is stored. For a full explanation of Australian rules football's national competition, the official AFL clubs directory at AFL.com.au is the authoritative source.

Example AFL Teams the Tool Can Generate

To illustrate what the generator returns, here are three real outputs drawn from the data — each a genuine entry in the 18-club array:

  • Geelong Cats — founded in 1859, the Cats play at GMHBA Stadium and are one of the competition's most decorated sides with 9 premierships, including three between 2007 and 2022.
  • Brisbane Lions — based at The Gabba in Queensland, the Lions claimed back-to-back-to-back premierships in 2001, 2002, and 2003, making them a standout expansion-era success story.
  • Greater Western Sydney Giants — founded in 2009 and playing at ENGIE Stadium in Sydney, the Giants represent the AFL's newest expansion into New South Wales and have not yet won a premiership.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How does the AFL Team Generator work?

The generator randomly selects from all 18 current Australian Football League clubs. Each result includes the team's nickname, location, home ground, founding year, club colours, premiership history, and current coach.

Q.How many AFL teams are in the generator?

All 18 current AFL clubs are included, from traditional Victorian clubs founded in the 1800s to modern expansion teams from Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, and New South Wales.

Q.Can I generate more than one AFL team at a time?

Yes. Use the Number of Teams control to generate between 1 and 10 teams in a single click. Each team in the set is unique — the generator avoids duplicates within the same result.

Q.What information does each AFL team result show?

Each result displays the official club name, nickname, location, home ground, founding year, team colours, and full premiership history. Where available, the current head coach is also shown.

Q.Is the AFL Team Generator free to use?

Yes. The tool is completely free, requires no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. You can generate as many teams as you like.

Q.What can I use the AFL Team Generator for?

It is useful for AFL trivia nights, tipping competitions, fantasy football drafts, educational activities about Australian football history, and generating discussion topics for sports conversations.

Q.Does the generator favour successful clubs with more premierships?

No. Every one of the 18 clubs has an equal probability of being selected, regardless of how many premierships they have won. A club like Fremantle, which has never won a premiership, appears just as often as Essendon with 16.

Q.Which states are represented in the AFL?

The 18 clubs span five states: 10 Victorian clubs, 2 from Queensland (Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns), 2 from South Australia (Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Power), 2 from Western Australia (Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles), and 2 from New South Wales (GWS Giants and Sydney Swans).
